Position Overview

North Carolina Tenants Union is hiring a detail-oriented and passionate Operations Manager to lead our operations department.

Organization Overview

The North Carolina Tenants Union is the statewide union of local tenant unions united in our fight for housing as a human right. Working-class tenants best understand their needs and how to build a housing system that prioritizes people over profit. NCTU works with tenants to build durable, democratic tenant unions. NCTU's member-unions organize grassroots campaigns led by directly-affected tenants to stop displacement, win critical repairs, stop rapid rent increases, democratically control their housing and strengthen tenants' rights. NCTU is member-led and -driven, and our Board is made up of local tenant leaders.

Position Summary

We are seeking a values-aligned Operations Manager to join our highly democratic, member-driven organization. This role will be instrumental in maintaining and improving the operational infrastructure that supports our statewide network of 5 tenant unions in Asheville, Winston-Salem, Durham & Raleigh, Morganton, and New Hanover. The ideal candidate will enjoy a workplace where their ideas and input will be valued and respected, and will bring both technical expertise and creative problem-solving skills to strengthen our organizational systems to most effectively empower our membership. NCTU is currently in an exciting period of growth, and this position will be instrumental in helping to operationalize that growth. We’re looking for someone with an interest in developing with the organization and growing with us.

Responsibilities
  • People Operations — Manage employee benefits, HR processes, hiring, and onboarding for NCTU staff.
  • Systems Development — Maintain and continuously improve NCTU's current operational systems and build new operational systems as needed, in consultation with the Executive Director.
  • Organizing Logistics — Provide logistical support for organizing efforts, including travel coordination and merchandise ordering.
  • Dues & Donor Follow-Up — Follow up with members and donors whose dues or recurring donations lapse to resolve payment issues.
  • Office Support — Support regional offices with supplies, rent payments, and other operational needs.
  • Documentation & Records — Manage organizational documents, board meeting minutes, and training materials.
  • Compliance Coordination — Bottom-line compliance reporting, working closely with our external  bookkeeper, CPA, and legal counsel to ensure timely and accurate filings.
  • Digital Tools Support — Support staff use of Action Network (newsletters and communications) and Action Builder (organizing database).
  • Grant & Funder Tracking — Maintain NCTU's Airtable database to track grant reporting deadlines and funder management.
Experience and Qualifications
  • 2-3 years of experience in operations within a nonprofit
  • Commitment to tenant organizing and the mission of the NC Tenants Union
  • Strong commitment to member-led and -driven decision making and organizational leadership
  • Experience with HR functions such as benefits administration required, and hiring and onboarding highly preferred
  • Strong organizational skills and comfort managing multiple workstreams and deadlines simultaneously
  • Basic understanding of nonprofit compliance requirements (e.g., 501c3 reporting) and comfort coordinating with outside bookkeepers, CPAs, or legal counsel; experience working with external vendors highly preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Familiarity with digital organizing, databases or communications platforms (e.g., Action Network, Action Builder, Airtable) is a plus
  • Experience supporting distributed or multi-office teams is a plus

  • Openness to and willingness to accept and adjust to feedback given by organizational leadership, members, and staff
Salary and Benefits

Salary Range: $60,000 - $70,000 annually
